The Master Bedroom:
It's Basic Elements
Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot that can be done in the bedroom as far as arranging the furniture
is concerned, especially if the bed is large. This makes bedroom decorating more limited than other rooms in the home. But here are a few tips to make
decorating your bedrooms easier.
The bedroom should be more than a resting place.
It should also be a place to fulfill your fantasies. That will be different for everyone. You may
want your bedroom to resemble the tomb of a pharaoh, an Arabian tent, a country retreat, or as
austere as an ecclesiastical chamber. Of all the rooms in your home, the bedroom is the most
personal. Not many eyes cast their view of it. It is the one room you are entitled to have complete,
undisturbed and total privacy. While not everyone is fortunate enough to have a beautiful
fireplace in their bedroom, there is generally enough space in the Master Bedroom to handle
most, if not all, of the pieces shown here.
But amidst all this originality, there are a few basic
elements one will find or generally chose to place in one's bedroom. They are: a bed and bed frame,
end tables, chests, a chair and ottoman, a desk (if there is room), a soft, warm floor covering, a
window treatment that coordinates with the style of the room, lamps and, of course, accessories.
Bedroom Decorating Tips
My tip for you here is this: While you may be very
conservative in the common areas of your home, even sedate, try to use more imagination and flair
when it comes to your bedroom. This is the place to go all out and create a space that is perfect for
whoever sleeps there.
My second tip is this: Don't place the bed against
an outer wall, as it is too close to the elements (cold, wet and heat). Some architects don't consider
this when they design the home, but hopefully there is one or inner walls that will work, without
blocking the entry to the room. I personally only have two walls where my
king-
sized bed can be
placed. I've use both walls over the years and tired of both locations long ago. Now I have my
bed split between the two walls on an angle, and I absolutely love it.
However, if you must use an outer wall, try to
place a large bookshelf between the bed and the wall to separate sleepers from the elements. If that
is impossible, hang heavy draperies between the wall and bed.
I got bored a long time ago with the "matching night tables" flanking the bed. I much prefer the
unmatched look. I also love my wicker chest, placed at the foot of the bed. I like the extra
storage I get, plus it helps to elongate the rather square appearance of the bed.
Break free from the "matched set" look yet again by using a headboard that does not match, but
compliments the tables and other furniture in the room. It is far more personalized, custom and
interesting than the "Levitt's look". The only reason that "sets" were created was to sell more
furniture, not to enhance the design of rooms.
